Hostel Description:
Pousada Pais Tropical is a family run guesthouse in the heart of the Historic "Pelourino" District of Salvador, Brazil. It is a new guesthouse that seems to be going thru some growing pains, which are made up for by the great staff.

Staff:

The staff of Pousada Pais Tropical was super friendly and helpful. It is run by a family with the head person being the older Father. None of them really speak any English however, but they will do their best to try and communicate with you.

Location:
90%
Located in the Historic "Pelourino" area of Salvador, you are very close to many of the old sites of the city. There are also plenty of stores, restaurants, eateries and internet cafes all very close to Pousada Pais Tropical.

How Clean is it?:
75%
Pousada Pais Tropical was decently clean, however I have stayed at cleaner places. They didn't clean my room once the 8 days while I was there, which I don't really mind, however the bathrooms could get a bit messy at times. The building itself, being in the historic area of Salvador, is somewhat old and rundown.

Any Character?:
70%
Pousada Pais Tropical has a decent amount of character thanks mainly to the old building the guesthouse is housed in. Other than that, there really isn't too much in the way of character with Spartan rooms and few decorations in the one common room.

How Fun was it?:
70%
When thinking of "fun" places, Pousada Pais Tropical doesn't come to mind. They don't offer very many activities and don't really have anything to keep you entertained if you decide to hang out at the guesthouse.

Facilities:
80%
They had dorms, doubles, twins, triples, quads, free buffet breakfast, airport drop off service, paid internet, TV in common room, common room, fans in room, hot water (in some bathrooms), 24 hour reception and a book exchange.

Value for your Money:
80%
The value for Pousada Pais Tropical on was ok, not very expensive and you get super good service. It would be a much better value if they had better rooms and some amenities like free Wi-Fi. Also, a big determinant for value will be which room they put you in. Some rooms are nice and breezy while others lack any windows and are so small they resemble prison cells.

Bar:
They did not have a bar.

Internet:
They had one computer with paid internet.

Food:
Pousada Pais Tropical had a free buffet breakfast that consisted of fresh fruits, fresh bread, jams, honey, fresh mango juice, coffee/tea, some deli meat and cake.

The
Extra Good
:
The staff at Pousada Pais Tropical were super friendly, especially the older man who ran the place. He always had a smile on his face and did his best to accommodate you during a stay there which I thought was really cool.

The
Extra Bad
:
Some of the rooms they had there were "Spartan" in every sense of the word. I stayed in a twin with my best friend from back home and it was all the way in the attic with a sloping roof so short that I couldn't stand up straight in most of the room. Plus, all it had was one power outlet which was being used by a fan.

Final Thoughts:
Pousada Pais Tropical is a new place and I think that in years to come it will be one of the better options to stay at in Salvador, especially thanks to the wonderful service that you get there. In the meantime though, because of the sparse rooms and the chance that you could be put in one of the tiny closet like rooms, as well as the fact that they don't have some of the common amenities like free Wi-Fi, I know you can find better options to stay at in Salvador. However, if all you care about is staying in the heart of the historic area of Salvador in a basic room with some good staff, Pousada Pais Tropical may be for you.

Would I Stay There Again?:
No, even though I like the staff, I need Wi-Fi and don't want to stay in an attic again.
