Staff: 95%

Guangdong Guest House is run by a one man army named Simon. The guy is obviously over worked running two hostels all by himself doing all the cleaning, checking in/out and giving travelers any information they might need. He is also available 24 hours a day by phone since he lives in the guest house (this guy is a working machine). You would think all the pressure from the work would get to some people, but Simon always had a smile on his face and is happy to assist you in any way possible.

Location: 85%

Guangdong Guest House has a unique location located inside of a huge building named Chungking Mansion. Chungking mansion itself is full of shops, hostels, guest houses and eateries. It has a very interesting crowd of Indians, Africans and tourists. The building itself is pretty run down, but it is located right across the street from a subway stop as well as a few blocks from a ferry to Hong Kong island.

How Clean is it?: 90%

Many budget accommodations are known for being rather dirty in Hong Kong, but Guangdong Guest House is an exception to this stereotype. It is cleaned thoroughly everyday and Simon will even schedule his cleaning to be when you aren't in the room in the afternoon.

Any Character?: 85%

The interesting location inside Chungking Mansion as well as the cramped space coupled with all the space saving furniture makes for a hostel that fits in perfectly in Hong Kong creating a unique feel with character.

How Fun was it?: 75%

Guangdong Guest House isn't a good place to meet other travelers or have a lot of "fun", however the location gives some entertainment, and the free internet along with TV/DVD helps to pass the time.

Value for your Money: 85%

Final Thoughts:

Hong Kong is known for being full of crappy budget accommodation. Space is very expensive on the tiny, crowded island so if you want to stay somewhere that isn't a total shit hole, you usually have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Guangdong Guest House is an exception to this rule. It is clean, had great staff and an awesome location at a reasonable price making it an attractive option for budget travelers.

Would I Stay There Again?:

Yes.
