Ubuntu Backpackers Review and Information

Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa

Hostel Description:

Located about five minutes walk from the famous breaks of Jeffrey's Bay (closest being Bonyards, and about a ten minute walk to SuperTubes), Ubuntu is one of the more relaxed hostels in the area for those who want simply chill out with a couple beers after a long day of surfing or relaxing on the beach.

Staff: 92%

The staff at Ubuntu Backpackers were helpful, friendly and always happy to join you for a beer or game of pool. It isn't a huge hostel, so because of that, the staff can make more of an effort to help you out individually.

Location: 90%

Ubuntu Backpackers had a good location being about a five minute walk from the beach, and ten minutes walk from the famous surf spot known as SuperTubes. It is also right behind the one Billabong surf shop in the area where you can buy surf apparel and gear or rent a surfboard and wetsuit. Ubuntu is also located right next to a supermarket.

How Clean is it?: 85%

It was a very clean hostel.

Any Character?: 87%

Ubuntu Backpackers is a beach house with a bit of African flavor added the décor. The guy who owns it, Jamie, is an avid surfer himself and it shows in the way the place is setup with old plush couches, a lot of tile floors and places to hang your wetsuit up at.

How Fun was it?: 85%

It is a smaller place and not geared to those searching for a huge party, but at the same time, the staff makes an effort to show the hostel guests a good time with pool tournaments, movie nights and South African Braais.

Facilities: 90%

There is a bar, free pool table, doubles, triples, dorms, free internet (although I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work), one computer, Braai, chill out areas, adequate number of bathrooms, kitchen and dinner tables.

The Extra Good:

The owner Jamie is a really stand up guy who really helped me out one night when I was in a jam because the Baz-Bus forgot to pick me up. He gave me my own room for the night at the price of a dorm which was really nice.

The Extra Bad:

It would have been great to have working Wi-Fi, but I was told that for some reason the Wi-Fi rarely ever worked for people who had computers that weren't bought in South Africa.

Final Thoughts:

Ubuntu Backpackers is a great place for travelers to go to in order to meet people, get some surfing in and have a good chilled out time. If you are looking for a huge party, you should look elsewhere, otherwise, this is the place for you.

Would I Stay There Again?:

Fo-Sho braaa!
