Paris Hotel Review and Information

Cairo, Egypt

Hostel Description:

The Paris Hotel is one of the many options in Cairo for the budget backpacker to choose from, but stands out because of the level of service along with the quality of the rooms.

Staff: 90%

The Paris Hotel staff is run by two older Egyptian twins (I was confused because I met them at separate times) along with other family members. They are extremely friendly and most importantly don't try to persuade you into signing up for a bunch of tours (which seems to be the case at a lot of other hostels in the area). They are helpful, friendly and candid which makes for a nice conversation over a cup of tea (they don't really drink booze in the Arab world).

Location: 85%

They had a fantastic location being about a ten minute walk away from the Cairo museum right in the heart of downtown Cairo near "Midan Talaat Harb". They are also pretty much directly above a great place to get some good, inexpensive food.

How Clean is it?: 85%

The hostel was cleaned every day so I had no complaints in the department.

Any Character?: 80%

The Paris Hotel has a bit more of a Western European feel to it because it is very nice and somewhat upscale. That may detract a bit for those who want to stay somewhere that is a bit more "Egyptian" but they do include a couple flares of Egyptian décor into the hostel giving somewhat of a cool fusion of character and class.

How Fun was it?: 75%

I wouldn't say that it is the best place to have a fun time at, but then again that depends on what your idea of "fun" is. For those that like quiet nights talking over a glass of tea, you'll enjoy it, however I do have to say that there were a couple nights where people brought a good deal of liquor to drink which always ended up in a good time since many of the Egyptians (no offense guys) were very entertaining when they drank since they didn't do it very often.

Facilities: 80%

They had doubles, singles, twins, triples, a nice kitchen, A/C in each room, free internet and Wi-Fi, a common room, tour desk, airport transfer (a bit on the expensive side though by Egyptian standards) and book exchange.

Bar:

They did not have a bar.

Internet:

One computer with free internet along with free Wi-Fi.

Food:

They had a continental breakfast for a somewhat expensive price, but it was good. I would recommend going out to the street stalls to get some real Egyptian "Ful" (beans).

The Extra Good:

It was a very nice place, pretty classy and at a great price. It was a nice change from the usual hostel I was used to staying at.

The Extra Bad:

The bathroom in the rooms (at least mine) didn't have a toilet, and the common toilets doubled as showers making them pretty cramped.

Final Thoughts:

The Paris Hotel is a nice place, almost a bit too nice though since it doesn't feel genuinely Egyptian except for the awesome Egyptian service. It is a great place for those who want a nice, comfortable and classy place to stay at for a great price and don't mind that it isn't overly "Egyptian".

Would I Stay There Again?:

Of course.
