The staff at Castle Rock Hostel was super friendly and polite. They have a veritable army of staff members due to the size of the place and they are for the most part other travelers staying for an extended period of time in Edinburgh.

How Clean is it?:
82%
Castle Rock Hostel was for the most part a very clean place. All the rooms and common areas were well made up and the furnishings were in good condition. The only downside was that they seemed to not use an adequate amount of detergent when washing their sheets because most of the "clean" bed sheets had an unpleasant odor.

Any Character?:
99%
Wow, I have to say that Castle Rock Hostel had one of the highest amounts of character I have seen in a hostel during my travels. It is housed in a very old building for one. Two, they have decorations all over the place really adding to the overall feel. Three, the common rooms each have their own theme. This place doesn't skimp on character.

How Fun was it?:

Castle Rock Hostel was a pretty fun place to spend time at no matter what your taste. They had common rooms that were quiet for those that only wanted to read a book. They had one huge common room with a free pool table perfect to meet other travelers at. They had free Wi-Fi as well as a movie room. They booked plenty of tours at the hostel. Finally, the location is great being right next to most of Edinburgh's tourist attractions.

The
Extra Good
:
The amount of character in Castle Rock Hostel was phenomenal. They really went the extra mile putting up decorations all over the hostel whether in the form of paintings, full suits of armor or funky furnishings.

The
Extra Bad
:
The sheets that were supposed to be "clean" didn't smell as such when I was there. When I got into my bed the first night and every night thereafter I thought it had a weird smell but I wasn't sure if it was from my bed or the stinky guy in the bunk above me. When he left my bed still smelled so the following morning when the room was cleared and all the beds were made again with new sheets I did a bit of smelling around and found out they all smelled slightly bad.

Final Thoughts:
Castle Rock Hostel is a great place to stay at if you don't mind staying in large hostels. The common rooms were super comfortable and chalk full of character, the staff was very helpful and friendly, the location was fantastic being right next to Edinburgh Castle and the list of free amenities is comprehensive.
