Port Elizabeth, South Africa City Travel Information

The best thing to do while in Port Elizabeth. Hold Lion cubs.
City Description:
Port Elizabeth is South Africa's 5th largest city located in the Eastern Cape about half-way in between Cape Town and Durban. Many people use it as a rest point on the Garden Route as they head towards other locations, but you might be compelled to spend a bit of time here since there is a lot to do in Port Elizabeth.

City Highlights:
By far the best thing to do in Port Elizabeth is to make a visit to the Sea View Lion Park to hold lion cubs. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

City Lowlights:
Port Elizabeth is also known as the "Windy City" and when I was there, it definitely lived up to its name! I didn't particularly enjoy the 80mph winds whipping sand in my face as I walked along the beach.

Restaurants:
No matter what your taste, you'll find what you are looking for in Port Elizabeth. I even got some Mexican food, but it was far from authentic and tasted like crap.

Nightlife:
From what I understand, the nightlife in Port Elizabeth is surprisingly not that great in terms of clubs. However, there is a thriving tourist area near the beach where you have a good amount of bars/pubs to choose from.

Public Transport:
Like most South Africa cities, the public transportation in Port Elizabeth isn't great. The bus system isn't very good which leaves you with a choice between a normal taxi or minibus taxis which seem to be ubiquitous in South Africa. I wouldn't recommend the minibuses though since they are usually super packed and unsafe.

The People:
I didn't meet a lot of the locals, but the ones I did meet were pretty friendly.

Sights:
You have a good amount of things to do and see in Port Elizabeth. My favorite was a visit to the Sea View Lion Park which has Lions, Tigers, Zebras and a lot of other animals that you can view. The best part about visiting the park is that you get a chance to hold lion cubs for about $5. Besides that, there is Addo Elephant Park which has a large amount of Elephants to see.

My Thoughts on this City:
I really enjoyed my time here. Port Elizabeth had a great infrastructure, good amount of entertainment and tourist activities to choose from while still not seeming like the typical jam-packed metropolis.
