Florence, Italy City Travel Information

A view of Florence and the "Ponte Vecchio".
City Description:
Florence is one of the major Renaissance cities in Italy being home to the once powerful Medici family. Now it serves as a tourist hotspot with cobblestoned roads, old Italian churches and some of the best art galleries in the world.

City Highlights:
You can see Michelangelo's "David" here, and for me that was the highlight of my trip. It was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be and the level of detail that Michelangelo was able to impress upon this piece of stone is amazing.

City Lowlights:
After you see all the sites, there isn't much to differentiate Florence from other Western European cities and because there are so many tourists there, I didn't find the place to overly enjoyable once I had seen everything that I wanted to see.

Restaurants:
Florence has a little bit of everything for you with the majority of the food being Italian (go figure). Like most places in Italy you can find plenty of Cafés as well as gelato shops to satisfy your sweet tooth. Some of the restaurant workers can be a little rude though towards tourists, I supposed they don't appreciate how much money tourism brings there city.

Nightlife:
You have plenty of clubs and bars to keep your busy at night in all price ranges. You will also be able to find cafes and pubs a plenty in Florence If you want to have a more subdued night.

Public Transport:
Florence has a pretty good bus system with some buses catering specifically to tourist. If you don’t feel like taking a bus, you can always find a taxi. You might find the whole process easier if you get a bus map from one of the tourist information centers.

The People:
The few people I met in Florence were pretty friendly, but like most super touristy cities, I didn't get a chance to meet too many locals so I can't say too much about them.

Sights:
Make sure to visit the "Academia" gallery to see Michelangelo's "David", the Medici tombs (they are pretty over the top), the Duomo, and St Croce's Church which has the gravesites of Michelangelo, Dante, Galileo and Machiavelli amongst others, the Uffizi Gallery and the city's main bridge or "Ponte Vecchio".

My Thoughts on this City:
Florence is a cool place and I enjoy it every time I go. Florence has a fair share of touristy sites, some great gelato and an extensive public transport system all to make your trip there enjoyable. It is however slammed with tourists (at least during the high season) so you might find yourself lost in the tourist flood.
