Verona, Italy City Travel Information

Verona, the setting of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".
Verona, the setting of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".

City Description:

Verona is an Italian city renowned for being the setting of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". It is also a nice change of pace from the more touristy cities of Italy since most of the people on vacation here are for the mainly Italian.

City Highlights:

The atmosphere in the old town is great. Everyone is friendly and it is a great place to have a drink while people watching.

City Lowlights:

For those that are on a budget, finding a place to stay is going to be somewhat difficult. I attribute this to the fact that there aren't many backpackers here to begin with thus necessitating a need for budget accommodations. I know they have one or two hostels, but they are either far out of town or need to be booked well in advance.

Restaurants:

A walk around the old town will reveal a plethora of nice Italian restaurants to dine at. I even found a couple nice looking ones in some of the alleys of the old town! I didn't see much else but Italian food, but I am sure you could find something if you looked hard enough. There are also cafes a plenty.

Nightlife:

There didn't seem to be much in the way of clubs, but there are a lot of cafes and bars to spend the night drinking at.

Public Transport:

The bus system is pretty simple and extensive. Besides that, you have taxis which can be pretty costly.

The People:

To be honest, I didn't meet too many locals so I can't really make a judgment call on the people. I will say this though, most of the tourists there were Italian with a smattering of other Europeans.

Sights:

You can't miss the houses of Romeo and Juliet. Of course, they were fictional characters, but these are the houses of the non-fictional families to which they were members of, the Capulets and Montagues. Besides that, there are some other renaissance houses and ruins to look at, the second largest Coliseum in the world and the very impressive Castelvecchio.

My Thoughts on this City:

I really enjoyed my time in Verona, almost felt like I had stumbled upon a hidden gem considering how most of the tourists were Italian with a good amount of other Europeans. Living up to its Shakespearean legacy, it is a very romantic city and I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to be here with someone you love.
