Luxor, Egypt City Travel Information

Inside a Pharaoh's tomb at the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.
City Description:
Luxor may look like it is the Post Apocalyptic city from Mad Max but it is the place to go if you want to see some of the most famous sites in the world, namely the Valley of the Kings and the Karnack.

City Highlights:
The best thing about Luxor is going to the Valley of the Kings (along with the delicious pizzas I was able to get across the street from Oasis Hostel).

City Lowlights:
The touts here in Luxor aren't as bad as they are in Cairo, but even so, they are probably the worst part about going to Luxor. Once again, simply ignore them and they will leave you alone.

Restaurants:
There is a restaurant directly across the street from the Oasis Hostel that has GREAT pizzas. Also, make sure to go to some of the local juice stands and get the local drink of sugar water and milk (I can't remember the name).

Nightlife:
I didn't come across any nightlife in Luxor.

Public Transport:
You have your choice between taxis, minibuses that you will most likely not know how to navigate and horse drawn carriages that are geared towards tourists. You can get a good deal on the carriages if you negotiate a good price and the taxis aren't expensive in the slightest.

The People:
Everyone I met from Luxor was pretty nice. Like other places in Egypt, most people are very friendly to tourists. However, once again I have to stress the fact that women might have a very different experience in Luxor like other Egyptian cities. I met an Australian girl who I shared a cab with on the way to my hostel who was telling me stories about aggressive Egyptian men, and as soon as she got out of the cab she started getting harassed by a local.

Sights:
You have to make sure to check out the Valley of the Kings, the Karnack and Luxor Temple. You can do the Karnack and Luxor Temple in the same day, but give the Valley of the Kings its own day. Also, if you have the time and cash you can also do a Fallujah ride down the Nile River.

My Thoughts on this City:
The level of decay on the exterior of all the buildings was amazing and I found it to be quite fascinating. Once you go inside any of the buildings though you see it really isn't that bad. The city itself is quite hectic with cab drivers everywhere honking horns, pedestrians walking when and where they please along with a constant layer of dust in the air makes for quite the experience.
